R1200GS

BMW created the world's first large-displacement enduro
more than twenty-five years ago, and has dominated the
class ever since. Often imitated but never equalled, the
GS has won countless Bike of the Year awards and earned
the title of Swiss Army Knife Of Motorcycles. With four
outright wins in the Paris-Dakar Rally and five
generations of model development, BMW makes the ultimate
dual-sport motorcycle: the R1200GS.
The
R1200GS achieves a remarkably low weight through precise engineering and the use
of high-strength materials. The 1200cc counter-balanced engine smoothly delivers
105 hp; the Boxer engine, as always, has a very low cente of gravity. The
exhaust system is quiet yet has a throaty sound.
Torque from this, the biggest engine in any enduro, is
prodigious. A new six-speed close-ratio gearbox features
all helical gears and a new low-friction shifter
mechanism for smooth shifts.
The Telelever front suspension is light and strong. The
rear Paralever is totally free of any drive shaft
jacking effect. The standard rear spring strut has
travel-dependent damping for a smooth ride over small
ripples and good control over big bumps.
BMW's fabulous EVO brakes with optional Integral ABS
Generation II are fitted. On the GS, the ABS may be
switched off (if desired) for off-road use. The Semi
Integral system automatically provides load-sensitive
rear braking when the hand lever is used; the foot brake
operates the rear brake only.
The R1200GS is enhanced in many ways for 2008. Power has
been increased and the engine has a wider powerband.
Transmission changes enhance traction, acceleration and
gear shifting. Ergonomics are optimized with a new seat,
new hand protectors, and new double-butted aluminum
handlebars. The handlebars can now be installed in a
position ideal for riding offroad while standing. Detail
changes include a higher-output charging system and new
fuel level sensor system.
A really useful new option is the Enduro ESA. ESA
Electronic Suspension Adjustment provides on-the-fly
setting of shock absorber modes (Normal, Sport or
Comfort settings of compression and rebound damping on
both front and rear shocks. When stopped, the rider can
adjust for load (solo, with luggage, or two-up) with
just the push of a button. The Enduro ESA adds two modes
for offroad, with spring adjustment at both front and
rear. The more severe setting also increases the ride
height of the bike by about 2 cm.
Riders with shorter inseams are also accommodated with
the new lowered chassis option. The seat height is
brought down to 790 mm (31.1 in). Combined with the
light weight of the GS and narrowness in the fuel tank
area, the lowered bike is especially easy to handle.
STANDARD AND OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
Standard equipment includes light-alloy cast wheels,
heated handgrips and Flatscreen Display. Also included
are adjustable seat height, a 12-volt accessory socket,
hazard warning flashers, and self-cancelling turn
signals. Each bike is prewired for the BMW Motorcycle
Navigator II GPS. A standard immobilizer system uses a
"smart" ignition key which cannot be copied and makes
hotwiring impossible.
Optional Stability Control (available with ABS)
excessive wheelspin and consequent loss of stability.
Tire pressure monitoring, also available, will warn of a
flat tire due to a puncture before the tire deflates to
a dangerous level.
Major original equipment options are grouped into these
packages:
Safety Package includes antilock braking, stability
control, and tire pressure monitoring Equipment
Package One has an onboard computer, hand
protectors, and luggage brackets Equipment Package
